The Wine

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Pinot Noir is a single vineyard wine sourced from the Meadowbank vineyard in the Derwent Valley in southern Tasmania. The MV6 and Pommard clone vines were planted in 1989.

The 2022 growing season was cool with unsettled conditions during flowering which resulted in a moderate crop characterised by hen and chicken fruit set. Bunches readily achieved full ripeness and were hand-picked on 12 April prior to the onset of late season rain.

Forty percent of whole bunches were retained and placed at the bottom of an open fermenter which was then filled with destemmed grapes. Natural fermentation was followed by a short maceration resulting in 20 days on skins prior to draining and pressing in a basket press. The wine was transferred into Burgundian coopered French oak barriques, 40% new, for maturation over 10 months.

This is a bright deeply coloured Pinot Noir with ripe black cherry and plum fruit aromas complimented by wafts of Campari spice. Ripe fruit flavours are balanced by cedary oak tannins and soft natural acidity which combine to provide an agreeable presence on the palate.

Reviews

Halliday Wine Companion 2027 – 95 Points
“Bright ruby with lifted aromas of red/dark cherry, raspberry and red plum fruits cut with hints of exotic spice and amaro herbs, charcuterie, leaf litter, oak spice and citrus blossom. Harmonious and graceful with an enchanting, sleek palate shape, superfine silky tannins and a saline twang to the acidity as it slowly fades. Fantastic stuff.” Dave Brookes

THE VINEYARD

The Chardonnay and Pinot vineyard patches selected by Dawson James were planted in 1989. Consequently vine-age plays an important part in the development of flavour and the balance of the fruit.
